Good day everyone, I'm The Nifty Coder. Some of you might know me using other names. I'm by now almost 30 years old and I was born and still live in Germany.

My first contact with Computers and Software was actually with Windows 3.11 and some DOS games like Commander Keen. I've always been interested in games and I played a lot of those offline, because I didn't have access to the internet that early. When I was about 9 years old I visited a computer course that taught me about Word and Excel. A year later I had some kind of rough course in C++ teaching how to create a simple Shoot ’em up game, but the knowledge didn't really stuck with me and I forgot most of it.

Around 2004 I made my first steps into the internet and thereby started writing some simple Windows Batch Scripts to make my Windows computer do as I'd like. Also I played some online games based on the Quake Engine and there I learned more about scripting and started working simple macros, but I still didn't have any contact with some real code.

When I graduated from high school 2011 I was pretty lost and didn't know what I'd like to do with my life. A friend of mine pulled me along and I started vocational training as software developer together at the same company. That was when I started writing real code in Java and C++ and I discovered I was learning faster than most of the other students around. Because I got better pretty fast and it was a lot of fun, too, I started coding in my free time as well. This was also when I started working with Linux for the first time ( I'm using Arch, btw  😁 ).

Today I'm a full time software engineer and developer, working mostly with Java, TypeScript, HTML and CSS. I'm very exited about Open Source and especially FOSS, even though I don't contribute much to Open Source projects yet. I'm planning on changing that tough.

In my free time I still enjoy playing computer games with some of my leftover online friends or alone and I work on my own little software projects.

So, that's pretty much it for the time being, hope it's not too much to read. If you got any questions feel free to ask me here or via PN if you prefer it that way. Hope to hear from you guys and let's have some fine discussions here!

Hey, mate. What an awesome introduction. I can definitely see a few parallels between you and me with regards to how we got started programming, or at least what initiated our interest in the matter.

Are there any open source projects you have in mind that you'd like to contribute to?

First of all there's LineageOS. LineageOS is a fork of AOSP that's specialized in privacy. In this case I'd love to contribute as device maintainer, but I haven't been able to produce stable builds yet for my device. I've been using their builds up to now but if their current maintainer stops his support I'd love to be able to take over his role.

Then (also regarding Android) there is MicroG. It's an Open Source implementation of the Google Play Services for Push Notifications and they provide a location provider for network location tracking, additional to GPS. This project has become petty important to me and I am using it for years now. Time to give something back, I guess.

One project that I tried to contribute to was an android application, but my pull request hasn't been accepted yet and therefore I cannot yet say I contributed anything there. The developers have been quite inactive for a while now so I fear it'll not ever happen and I have to build the app for my purposes myself... 😥
